You swear no oath you cannot break for the right price. Order or chaos, crown or rebel... it is all the same coin to you, and you serve only the one paying. Loyalty is a leash, and you have never worn one.
The Mercenary is pure self-interest, undiluted by ideology or institution. They will work within the law when it benefits them and outside it when it does not. Unlike the Tyrant who builds oppressive systems or the Destroyer who tears everything down, the Mercenary simply takes advantage of whatever system exists. This is the archetype of the corrupt lobbyist, the politician who sells their vote, and the grifter who sees every crisis as an opportunity.
Strengths
- Clear-eyed understanding of incentive structures and self-interest
- Adaptability to any political environment
- Freedom from the self-deception that afflicts ideologues
- Ability to identify and exploit inefficiencies others overlook
Blind Spots
- Trust, once lost, is nearly impossible to rebuild
- A society of Mercenaries cannot sustain itself; cooperation requires some degree of good faith
- Short-term self-interest often conflicts with long-term self-interest
- The absence of loyalty leaves the Mercenary profoundly alone
Neighboring Archetypes
The Mercenary shares the Philosopher's flexibility but replaces detached wisdom with calculated self-interest. They share the Tyrant's disregard for others but without the institutional ambition. A Mercenary who gains power may become a Tyrant; one who loses all restraint may become a Destroyer. The rare Mercenary who develops genuine concern for others begins moving toward the Philosopher or even the Samaritan.
